Otto’s Long Lunch

2-minute read

Otto the tortoise sets off across the meadow to have lunch with his friend Pearl. But a lost rabbit, some little ducklings and a beetle stuck on his back all need his help on the way. Will he ever get there?

Ask the right questions

4Understand

Why did Otto keep stopping when he was already late?

Suggested answer

Because the others needed help, and being kind mattered more to him than being on time.

Keep talking

  • Was that a good idea? Why?

Sound familiar?

Children get through a lot of books, often far more than a busy parent could ever read themselves. You want to support their reading, but it’s hard to ask good questions about a story you don’t know, or to tell whether they’ve really understood it.

ReadWisely closes that gap. Spend a couple of minutes with the overview and you’ll know the story, the characters and what happens, with the right questions ready for the school run or bedtime.

How it works

  1. Add your child

Just a nickname and their birthday month, so every guide matches their age.

  2. Add the book they’re reading

Search by title or author, or scan the barcode. Your guide is ready in under a minute.

  3. Know the story, ask the questions

Read the two-minute overview, then ask the questions on the school run or at bedtime. Suggested answers show you what to listen for.

Everything you need, in a couple of minutes

Know the story

  • A short overview of the story, in plain words, so you don’t need to read the book.
  • The main characters and what happens, in order.
  • Written for their age, from first reading books to novels for twelve-year-olds.

Ask the right questions

  • Ten questions that build from remembering what happened, to understanding why, to what your child thinks.
  • Suggested answers, so you can tell whether they’ve understood.
  • Follow-up prompts to keep them talking when the answer is “I don’t know”.
  • Things to do together, like drawing a scene or acting it out.

Check they’ve understood

As you talk, tap whether your child got each answer, partly got it, or wasn’t sure. Over time you’ll see the books they’ve finished, the conversations you’ve had, and which kinds of questions they find easy, with simple tips for the ones to practise. Milestones and certificates along the way keep them keen.

For everyone who helps with reading

Homework with Mum, bedtime with Dad, the school run with Grandad? Share your account with up to four other adults, free. Everyone sees the same bookshelf, picks up the same guides, and can see how the children are getting on, whoever read with them last.

  • One family, one plan: shared adults use the same book credits.
  • See who read with whom: each reading check shows who did it.
  • You stay in charge: only you manage the plan and who’s invited.

Little things that make it easy

  • Reading goals

Set a goal like “read 4 days a week”, tick off the days and build a reading streak. A friendly email every Sunday shows how the week went.

  • Scan the barcode

Point your phone at the back of the book instead of typing its title.

  • See their progress

Books finished and words read, by week, month or year, and which kinds of questions they find easy.

  • On your home screen

Add ReadWisely to your phone’s home screen and open it like an app at bedtime.

Made to support your child’s reading

Your child still reads the book

The overview is for you, so you can talk about it with them. We describe books in our own words and never quote them.

Honest about what it knows

If we don’t know a book well, we tell you, and give you questions that work for any story instead of guessing at the plot.

Very little about your child

We only ask for a nickname and birthday month.

Questions

Do I need to have read the book?

No, that’s the point. The overview tells you the story in a couple of minutes, and the suggested answers show you what to listen for, so you can check they’ve understood without reading it yourself.

Does it replace my child reading the book?

No. Your child still reads the book: ReadWisely is for you, so you can talk with them about it. We describe books in our own words and never reproduce them.

What ages is it for?

School-age children, from their first reading books to novels for twelve-year-olds and up. Guides are written for four age groups (3–5, 6–8, 9–11 and 12+), and move up automatically as your child grows.

What if my book isn’t well known?

You can add any book, even one that isn’t in our search. If we don’t know it well enough to describe the plot, we’ll say so and give you ten questions that work for any story.

What counts as a book?

Each new book you add to a child’s bookshelf uses one from your allowance. Opening books you’ve already added, adding the same book for a brother or sister, or adding a book you’ve had before, is free.

Can grandparents or a childminder use it too?

Yes. Share your account with up to four other adults, free. They see the same children, guides and progress, so whoever helps with reading is ready.

Is there an app?

ReadWisely works in your phone’s web browser, and you can add it to your home screen so it opens like an app.

How many children can I add?

Up to 8 on any plan, each with their own bookshelf and progress.

Can I cancel?

Yes, any time, from the Plan page. You keep your plan until the end of the period you’ve paid for. Your children’s guides and progress stay in your account.
